At an age when children remain glued to the television, watching animation pogrammes, Vasundhara Thiara, 7, has been busy on her journey to prove that she is the finest golfer in the region. She is reportedly the youngest girl golfer in the Tricity. Vasundhara fell in love with the game when she was just 4.
She was recently ranked second nationally on the Albatross Junior Tour, India.
Besides winning many accolades, she also qualified for the US Kids European Championship, held in Scotland in July.
Starting her career at the age of 5, she won first prize in the US Kids Golf Tour played at the Army Golf Course in Patiala on May 17, 2009. Later she also won the same tour's campionship in Phillaur on September 19 and Albatross Junior Golf event at Chandigarh on September 27 last year. Vasundhara claimed top spot at CGA Junior Tournament in Chandigarh on February.
She doesn't only excel at golf, but also at academics.
She says her major strength in golf is putting and the long drive.
A class-II student of Vivek High School, she was given E category of the Albatross Junior Golf Tour at a special function held at the International Centre in New Delhi on July 31 for consistent performance on junior circuit.
She has been trained by the renowned mental expert and psychologist Amit Bhatacharya, who has also worked with Olympic gold medalist shooter Abhinav Bindra. Vasundhara says she liked to see others playing and that attracted her towards the discipline.
Adults guiding her say she had tremendous interest and passion for the game. "She does not think there are any short cuts to success and works hard to be on top of the game," they add.
Vasundhara says she wants to be a top national player. Talking about her interest and passion for golf, she says, "I enjoy it and want to see myself as one of the top national players."
